- Byrd School is an historic building which has recently been renovated. The 92 year old main building is in excellent shape after renovation in 1990. Further renovation was completed two years ago.
- Byrd School is in a safe, centrally located area, unpopulated by gang affiliation and drugs.
- Through the efforts of Dr. Monica Newton, Byrd applied for a Safe Routes to Schools grant. When Dr. Obasohan heard of our effort he brought the other schools on board and several schools were able to receive this grant.
- Our local neighborhood supports our school as volunteers.
- Byrd School has had no break in in over 30 years.
- Byrd School can house up to 380 students.
- The kitchen and cafeteria can house enough workers to provide lunches for 380 students.
- The library is large enough to add additional shelving to accommodate the required number of books for all 380 students.
- Byrd School was NOT eligible for a grant for low performing schools. The school has maintained high performance and has only been a Title I school for two years. This shows that Byrd School has maintained high performance while receiving less funding than other schools.
- Byrd was the first recipient of The Alabama Black Belt Arts Initiative grant and has received over $90,000 to support the arts program. In addition, our principal has written Arts grants for the school system and has garnered over $50,000 to support the arts in all our schools.
- The first three Nationally Board Certified teachers in our system received that certification while at Byrd School.
- A new $50,000 sport court was just added in December.
